Polar Vortex to Paradise: Why January Is the Best Time to Beach
Winter is coming. As I write this, a late summer heatwave has just broken, and it’s hard to imagine snow boots and short days. But late summer and early fall are the perfect time to plan a winter beach getaway to the Caribbean - and your January self will thank you.
Every time I return from a winter beach trip, someone says, “Oh my god, this is the PERFECT time for a vacation.” I just smile and nod. My favorite time to head to the beach is mid- to late-January when the post-holiday lull meets peak sunshine. Bonus: there are great prices just after Thanksgiving through mid-December if you plan ahead.
We don’t know exactly how cold it’ll be this winter, but we do know the days will be short and the sun scarce—especially up north. There’s nothing like leaving the airport in a Polar Vortex and landing a few hours later to tropical breezes and golden light.
♿ Accessible Escapes
For travelers with mobility challenges, there are some fantastic beach options. If you use a cane or walker, look for beaches that are flat and dune-free, with accommodations just steps from calm Caribbean coves. I won’t put these gems on blast here, but I’m happy to share if you reach out.
Wheelchair users have more options than ever, thanks to innovations in design and resort accessibility. Some properties offer free beach wheelchairs and/or Mobi-mats; others have nearby beach and aqua chairs available for rent. (Tip: In the U.S., many State and National Park beaches offer free beach wheelchairs—check the ranger station!)
🐢 Sample Itinerary: Barbados in January
Here’s a peek at some of my favorite activities from a recent trip:
1. Catamaran Snorkeling with Calabaza Sailing Cruises
Hotel pick-up, breakfast, guided swim with turtles, lunch, and drinks—an unforgettable day.
2. Food Walking Tour in Bridgetown
Food is culture, history, and geography rolled into one. Delicious and enlightening.
3. Mount Gay Rum Distillery Tour + Cocktail Workshop
Includes transportation and a visit to the Mount Gay Legacy Museum, which shares the truthful history about enslaved labor in Barbados.
4. Friday Night at Oistins Fish Fry
A lively, local experience full of flavor and fun.
5. Sunday Brunch at Champers
Dining on a deck overlooking the Caribbean, followed by a stroll on the South Coast boardwalk.
6. Watching Racehorses Swim in Carlisle Bay
From our Hilton balcony, we had a bird’s-eye view of this fascinating morning ritual.
Fresh fish sandwiches, cash only, no reservations. Worth the line—every time.
8. Beach Lounging, Book Reading, Belly Laughing
The best part of any beach trip: doing absolutely nothing with people you love.
